What Is the Dating Scene Like in the UK in 2026?

💡The UK has about 69.5 million people, and around 38% of adults in England and Wales do not live in a couple. Ofcom found one in ten UK adults used an online dating service in 2024, with 18 to 24 year olds the most likely to.

The UK is a big, varied dating market. The ONS puts the population at about 69.5 million (mid-2025), and its latest figures for England and Wales show that 34.9% of adults have never married or formed a civil partnership, up from 32.6% in 2015. Only 62.1% of adults live in a couple, so close to four in ten do not. Around 8.6 million people in the UK live alone.

Dating apps are part of everyday life, but they are not taking over. Ofcom found that about 4.9 million UK adults, one in ten, used an online dating service in 2024, and that the biggest apps lost users over the year. Younger adults use dating services most, while older users who do date online tend to spend longer on the sites they use.

The demand for safer, more verified dating experiences is reshaping the market. High-profile fraud cases and growing awareness of romance scams have made identity verification a priority for UK singles. Platforms that can prove their members are real, like Smooch, are seeing the fastest growth in trust and engagement.

What Makes UK Dating Culture Unique?

💡UK dating culture blends relaxed pub dates, dry humour and banter, strong regional differences, and a growing focus on safety when choosing where to meet people.

The pub date. The pub is the classic British first-date venue. It's casual, affordable, and offers easy conversation over a drink, with no pressure to stay for a three-course meal. If you would rather not drink, most pubs now serve good alcohol-free options, and a coffee or a walk works just as well.

Dry humour and banter. British dating culture values wit. Playful, slightly teasing back-and-forth is a common way to show interest, so expect it in messages and on dates. Kindness matters more than being clever, though: banter should leave both people smiling.

Safety consciousness. UK daters are increasingly safety-aware. Many bars and venues train staff to help anyone who feels unsafe on a date, and more people now check that a match is genuine before meeting. This growing safety consciousness is one reason verified platforms like Smooch are gaining traction. Our online dating safety checklist covers the basics.

Regional differences. Dating in London is fundamentally different from dating in Edinburgh, which is different from dating in Cardiff. Each city has its own pace, expectations, and social norms, which is exactly why city-specific guides matter. A first date at a candlelit pub in Edinburgh's Grassmarket is a world apart from cocktails in Shoreditch.

What Do the Latest UK Online Dating Statistics Show?

💡About 4.9 million UK adults used an online dating service in 2024. Tinder reached 1.9 million adults in May 2024, Hinge 1.4 million and Bumble 1.1 million. Romance scam losses rose 23% to £39.2 million in 2025.

The figures below come from official statistics and regulators, with the year each one covers. Ofcom's figures show that dating apps are widely used but have lost some users: it reported that Tinder lost around 600,000 UK users over the year to May 2024. Smooch is well-positioned as a trusted, verified alternative to platforms that prioritise growth over safety.

Age matters too. Ofcom found that one in five online adults aged 18 to 24 used a dating service in May 2024, and 17% of those aged 25 to 34. Only 6% of 55 to 64 year olds did, but those who did spent the longest time on them, an average of 5 hours 43 minutes in the month. What Are Your Rights When You Cancel a Dating Subscription in the UK?

💡If you sign up online you usually have 14 days to cancel a service contract, though you may pay for what you have used. New subscription rules under the DMCC Act 2024 are due in January 2027.

Most dating sites charge a monthly or longer subscription, so it helps to know the rules before you pay. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, the cancellation period for a service bought online ends 14 days after the day you sign up. If you asked the service to start straight away and then cancel within those 14 days, you can be asked to pay for the part you have already used, in proportion to the full price.

The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCC Act) adds more. Its consumer protection rules came into force on 6 April 2025, and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) can now fine businesses directly for breaking consumer law, up to 10% of global turnover. The Act's separate rules on subscription contracts are not yet in force: on 9 August 2026 the government said they will start in January 2027.

Before you pay for any dating site, check:

  1. The total price and the plan length (one month, three months, six months).
  2. Whether the plan renews automatically, and at what price.
  3. How to cancel: online, in an app store, or by contacting the company.
  4. Whether paying through the Apple App Store or Google Play means you must cancel there instead.
  5. The cancellation and refund terms in the site's terms and conditions.

Smooch is free to join and create a profile. A paid membership is needed to message, at £19.99 a month in the UK, and the price is shown before you pay. You can cancel online any time. Our UK dating site prices guide compares the main sites, and membership explains what you get.

How Do You Report a Romance Scam in the UK?

💡Stop replying, call your bank straight away if you have sent money, report the profile to the dating site, and report the scam to Report Fraud (formerly Action Fraud). In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.

Romance fraud is rising. UK Finance reports that 6,335 romance scam cases led to losses of £39.2 million in 2025, up 23% in value on 2024. Scammers build trust quickly, avoid video calls and then ask for money for an emergency, travel or an investment.

  1. Stop sending money or gift cards, and do not share any more personal details.
  2. If you have paid, contact your bank or card provider first so it can try to stop or recover the payment.
  3. Report the profile using the dating site's block and report tools.
  4. Report the scam to Report Fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland on 101.
  5. Keep screenshots of the profile, messages and payment details.
