Best Free Dating Sites in the USA (2026)

"Free" on a US dating app usually means free to join, free to browse, and free to message once you match. Paid tiers add more likes, show you who liked you, or push your profile higher. The table shows the free version of each, checked in October 2026. Several of these apps, including Tinder and Hinge, show paid prices only in the app, so we don't list them.

• You want to message without paying: Plenty of Fish or Facebook Dating.
• You want long, detailed profiles: OkCupid or Hinge.
• You prefer women to start the conversation: Bumble, where women message first or set an Opening Move for matches to answer.
• You want the biggest pool in a big city: Tinder or Hinge.
• You want every person ID-checked: a paid, verified site such as Smooch.

Many people use two apps at once: one free, one paid. There's no rule against it.

This is what each service says on its own pages about its free and paid versions, checked October 2026:

• Tinder: free to download. Plus adds unlimited likes and rewinds, Passport, ad-free swiping and Incognito; Gold adds See Who Likes You, weekly Super Likes and a monthly Boost; Platinum adds Prioritized Likes. Prices are shown in the app, not on Tinder's tiers page.
• Hinge: messaging your matches is free, with a daily like limit. Hinge+ and HingeX add unlimited likes, a full view of everyone who liked you, and extra filters.
• Bumble: since Opening Moves, women can message first or set a question for matches to answer. When a match answers, she has 24 hours to reply before the match expires.
• eharmony: Basic membership is free with no time limit and includes the compatibility quiz, likes, a first message and limited messaging. Premium, sold on 3, 6 and 12 month plans, adds unlimited messaging and all photos. Prices appear after you log in.
• Plenty of Fish, OkCupid and Facebook Dating: see the table above. Facebook Dating has no paid tier at all.

Questions worth asking before you join any site:

1. Is everyone verified, or is it optional?
2. Can I see the full price, and how to cancel, before I sign up?
3. Does the site say who runs it and how to reach a real person?
4. Are the people near me looking for the same thing I am?

1. Auto-renewal. Most dating subscriptions renew at the end of each period until you cancel. Note the renewal date when you buy.
2. Introductory prices. A cheap first week or month often renews at the full price. Check what you will pay after the offer ends.
3. Long plans. Three, six or twelve month plans cost less per month but are paid up front. Only choose one if you are sure.
4. One-off extras. Boosts, super likes and similar extras are sold separately on many apps and add up quickly.
5. App store billing. If you paid through Apple or Google, cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Google says uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription.

In 2024 the Federal Trade Commission finalised an updated Negative Option Rule, often called "click-to-cancel", which would have made cancelling a subscription as easy as signing up. Its main parts were due to take effect on July 14, 2025. On July 8, 2025, the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit vacated the rule, finding the FTC had not followed the required rulemaking steps.

In March 2026 the FTC published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking asking for public comment on whether to keep, amend or replace its negative option rules, including whether to adopt parts of the vacated 2024 rule. That is an early step: it does not create new obligations by itself. Check ftc.gov for the latest position.

You are still protected in the meantime. The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA) is federal law and still applies to online subscriptions, and many states, including California, New York and Minnesota, have their own automatic renewal laws. The FTC has also acted against dating companies over cancellation: in August 2025 Match Group agreed to pay $14 million to settle FTC charges that included making it hard for users to cancel, and agreed to provide a simple way to cancel.

• Keep the chat on the app until you've video called.
• Be wary of anyone who is always overseas, can't video call, or mentions crypto or an investment.
• Meet in a public place and tell a friend your plans.
• Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven't met in person.
• Use the block and report buttons as soon as something feels wrong.
