1. What we collect
We collect and keep the information you give us on our website or apps, or in any other way. This includes:
- account details such as your name, email address, date of birth and password;
- your profile: photos, what you write about yourself, and preferences and personal details you choose to share, such as your gender, sexual orientation, interests, who you are looking for and the town you live in;
- the messages, likes, reactions and answers you send and receive;
- payment information when you buy something. Card details are taken and kept by our PCI-compliant payment processors; we do not store full card numbers;
- anything you send us when you contact support.
We also collect some information automatically, including your IP address, the device and browser you use, and how you use Smooch. We use your IP address to estimate your area (for example, to show you people nearby before you choose a town). Some of this uses cookies and similar technologies; see our Cookie Policy.
2. How we use it
- to provide, run and improve Smooch and our business;
- to manage your account, give you support and handle administration;
- to match you with people and show your profile to members you might like;
- to send you service emails and, unless you opt out, news, offers and recommendations about Smooch and other products, services or websites we think may interest you;
- to analyse how our website, members area and advertising perform;
- to research and understand how people use our services and those of others;
- to show your profile on other services in our network (see section 6 of our Terms);
- to keep members safe, prevent fraud and spam, and enforce our Terms.
3. Who processes it for us
We share your personal information with companies that process it on our behalf. They may only use it to provide their service to us and must handle it in line with this policy. They include:
- our dating platform provider, which runs member accounts, matching, messaging, moderation and our emails;
- our payment partners, who take payments and manage subscriptions;
- our website hosting provider, which also gives us privacy-friendly visitor statistics;
- Google reCAPTCHA, which checks that sign-ups and log-ins come from real people;
- Photon, a place search service from komoot that uses OpenStreetMap data: when you search for your town, the text you type and an approximate location are sent to it;
- Anthropic, which provides the AI behind our optional message helper and photo coach. When you use them, we send Anthropic the information needed for that request: for example the photos you ask about, your draft message, your profile, the other member's profile and the conversation you are replying to. We do not use the helper unless you ask it for something.
We do not give your personal information to public authorities unless the law requires us to.
4. Where it is processed
Your personal information may be stored and processed in any country where we, our partners or our service providers operate, including the United States. By giving us your information you agree that it may be transferred outside your home country.
6. Keeping it secure
We have security policies, rules and technical safeguards to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, misuse, disclosure, destruction or accidental loss. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee that your information, searches or messages will always be safe. Please take care when you share personal information.
7. Seeing and changing your information
Log in and open You to see and change your profile, photos and account details. To delete your account, open You, then Account and login.
When an account is deleted or deactivated, we may keep some information about it where we need to, for example to keep accurate records, prevent fraud, collect unpaid fees, enforce our Terms, protect other members, or as the law allows.
For any other request about your information, email support@smooch.com.
8. Age limit
Smooch is only for people aged 18 or over, or the age of majority where that is higher. It is not aimed at anyone younger. If we learn that we hold information about someone under that age, we delete it promptly.
9. Your email choices
When you join, you agree to receive emails from us. You choose at sign-up whether to receive marketing emails, and you can change your choices at any time: log in and open You, then Notifications, or use the "email preferences" link at the bottom of any email. You can keep, reduce or stop promotional emails and message notifications.
You can also unsubscribe using the link or button in any email we send.
10. Your subscription payments
Your subscription is personal to you and cannot be transferred. If your payment details change (for example your card's expiry date or your billing address), or you think your account or password has been lost, stolen or used without permission, contact us straight away at support@smooch.com. You are responsible for unauthorised use until we receive your message.
If a card is lost or stolen, or fraud is reported, we will cooperate fully with investigations by your bank or the police, which may include sharing your personal details with them.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes take effect when we post them here, and we will update the date at the top of this page. If you keep using Smooch after a change, you accept the updated policy. If you do not agree with it, stop using Smooch.
